Corporate Data Removal From Phone

These days, it is very common for people to take work on-the-go with them. Being able to have timely video chats, emails and calls with colleagues no matter the location is essential to businesses these days. Businesses are even offering their employees corporate phones for this reason, and it has made life and productivity a whole lot easier for the working world. When it is time to turn in your corporate cell phone for whatever reason - upgrading to a new model or leaving the company - it is essential that you remove as much corporate data as possible by performing a data wipe.

All About Wiping Data From a Corporate Phone

For Your Security

Corporate data is extremely sensitive. This is especially true if your company is working on something new, or if you or your employees have had to sign NDA contracts. Sensitive account information, contact information, financial details and more are at-risk whenever you turn over your corporate cell phone. Performing a corporate data removal from your phone is the only way to make sure you have the best security possible for your sensitive data. You never know who might get your cell phone next. In addition, you can’t count on a reseller to delete the information for you. It is important you, as a seller of your phone, stay vigilant in protecting sensitive corporate data.

How to Perform a Data Removal

Perform a Backup

There is an easy way to perform a corporate data removal from your phone. First, you will need to make sure you backup your phone, in case you need to refer to any old important information. If you do not perform a backup, you will permanently lose everything on your phone.

Transfer Personal Info

If there are any apps or accounts that you have created with your corporate email address, make sure you spend some time transferring those over to a new email address. Chances are once you leave the company, your email address will become defunct and these logins might not work anymore. In addition, if you have any personal emails, photos, text messages or other apps on your phone that you used for personal use, make sure you get those transferred off your phone. You can do this by performing a backup, or by plugging in your phone to a computer and transferring everything over via iTunes or a USB cable.

Factory Reset

The best, most secure way to wipe corporate data from a cell phone is to perform a factory reset. It will erase everything from the phone and restore it back to factory settings, just as if it were brand new. Depending on whether or not you have an iPhone or an Android, there are a couple of ways to go about a factory reset.

  1. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC. If you can't access a computer and your device still works, don’t worry, you can still erase and restore your device without a computer.
  2. Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to your computer with the cable that came with your device.
  3. If a message asks for your device passcode or to Trust This Computer, follow the onscreen steps.
  4. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod when it appears in iTunes.
  5. In the Summary panel, click Restore [device].
  6. Click Restore again to confirm. Then iTunes erases your device and installs the latest iOS or iPod software.
  7. After your device restores to factory settings, it restarts. Now you can set it up as new, or go ahead and sell it on to the next owner.

Depending on your Android phone, the menu may be slightly different. Here’s how most work:

  1. Go to Settings, then General Management.
  2. Tap on Reset all the way at the bottom
  3. Tap Factory Reset
  4. Scroll to the bottom and tap Reset

Wipe Data Remotely

If you have a G Suite account, you are able to remotely wipe your data from a mobile phone. This is especially helpful if your corporate phone was lost or stolen. It is also beneficial if a disgruntled employee won’t return their phone, or if you are ready to sell an old corporate phone.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.
  2. Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in
  3. From the Admin console Home page, go to Device management.
  4. To see Device management, you might have to click More controls at the bottom.
  5. Click Mobile devices.
  6. Select the devices you want to wipe and then click More More and then Wipe Device or Wipe Account. Note: If you’re not sure which option to choose, see Decide what to wipe from the device (above).
  7. Click Wipe Device or Wipe Account to confirm.
  8. If the user added more than one account to the device or if they added the same corporate account to their work profile and personal space, there are 2 entries for the device in the mobile devices list.
