Are Second Hand Phones for Sale on Craigslist To Be Trusted?

With cell phones updating almost every six months, people commonly swap their old phones for the newest model, creating quite the resale market. Used phone buyers reap the benefits and enjoy great deals on phones at low prices. But is buying used phones always safe?People commonly shop for second hand phones for sale on Craigslist. However, using Craigslist for second hand phones carries risks. This doesn’t mean to avoid Craigslist, but rather you should understand the platform’s dangers. To help make your Craigslist buying experience as safe as possible, we’re breaking down exactly what to look for when buying used phones from the platform.

Compare Prices

Before deciding on one specific seller, it’s important to compare prices across Craigslist. Though don’t make the mistake of comparing phone prices when the phone quality isn’t similar. Compare the prices of mint condition second hand phones to the prices of other mint condition used phones; bad condition phones to bad condition phones, etc. This gives a price range based on phone condition and also an idea of how sellers describe various levels of wear and tear. If the seller is reputable, the actual state of the phone will closely match the description. But never commit to a price based on condition until you can inspect the phone.

IMEI Numbers

Every cell phone has an IMEI number. They’re used to identify phones across cellular networks. Think of them like social security numbers. When phones are lost or stolen, IMEI numbers are “blacklisted” or added to a list used by carriers to identify certain phones.Always check a phone’s blacklist status before making a purchase from Craigslist. Several tools are available that take care of the job near-instantaneously. Never buy from a seller who won’t disclose the phone’s IMEI number.

Location, Location, Location

Since Craigslist is location-based, meeting locally in a public place with Wifi is something any reputable seller will agree to. This not only provides an opportunity to test the phone, but also safety for you as the buyer. Meeting somewhere you won’t get ripped off is just as important as testing the phone in person.

Lock Status

Most phones are locked to a specific service provider. They can be further locked by the provider if the original owner reports the phone as stolen, or has a hold for non-payment.Normal locked status means the phone won’t “talk” with any networks other than the original carrier. However, cell phone carriers can be compelled to provide the unlock code for used phones.Though do remember that IMEI blacklisted phones are not regulated the same way as carrier locked phones. Compelling a carrier to activate a stolen phone won’t happen.Second hand phones for sale on Craigslist aren’t dangerous if you take the right precautions. Make sure the IMEI number is clean, the phone is in good condition, the price is right, and you meet in a safe location before making your purchase.Avoiding scams is simply a matter of going in with a little knowledge, and being mindful of personal safety.
